1997 $1 Sir Charles Kingsford Smith Silver Proof Coin

Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, was born at Hamilton, Queensland on 9th February 1897.

He spent the greater part of his life at the controls of aeroplanes, setting distance records between Australian capital cities and other continents.
Sir Charles is stil regarded as one of the greatest pilots ever.

He possessed all the abilities that are essential for piloting aeroplanes under the conditions required to set records. His untimely demise came over Aye Island off the Burmese coast in November 1935 whilst trying to break another England-Australia record with co-pilot Tommy Pethybridge.

The exact circumstance surrounding their deaths are still a mystery today.

To commemorate the centenary of Sir Sharles Kingsford Smith's birth, The Royal Australian Mint, in accordance with their tradition of honouring great Australian, is proud to release this $1 coin.
